Yesterday afternoon, Luca Parmitano (@Astro_Luca) tweeted his first picture of the United States! Smack dab in the center, it was a picture of landlocked Kansas! At first I looked at it and was mildly disappointed. Luca’s photos are usually so beautiful, why was this one just a brown blur? Then I read the caption “like a Mondrian, …” and looked at it again. Mondrian is a style of painting developed by Dutch painter Piet Mondrian in the early 1900s, charecterized by geometric shapes. Sure enough, this second glance brought forward an astonishing array of fields in geometric patterns and colorations. As always, I am stunned by Luca’s poetic and far reaching take on the world we live on.
